To Charge or Not to Charge

Block fees are always a sticking point between physicians and patients.  Most physicians feel that creating a block fee program is quite an ordeal and not worth the hassle.  If you don't approach block fees properly it can be extremely time consuming and turn into a nice mess.  However, if the program is developed appropriately and in line with OMA guidelines, block fee billing programs can greatly supplement your income and simplify your practice.  Like anything, there is a right and a wrong way to approach block fees, this article at healthydebate.ca highlights some of the wrong approaches and consequences:  http://healthydebate.ca/2011/10/topic/cost-of-care/block-fees  . If a block fee billing program is done properly then it is usually well received by patients, as long as patients first understand uninsured services.

The OMA provides members with guidelines for uninsured services and block fee billing here: https://www.oma.org/Member/Resources/Documents/PhysiciansGuideToUninsuredServices.pdf  (you will need to login to the OMA).

OMBIS members can access further information on block fee billing under our "Uninsured Services" section.

We have been playing around with the idea of creating customized programs for physicians if there is an interest.  Are you interested?  Email administration@ombis.ca with your feedback and thoughts.
